 | My passion for printmaking began in my junior year of college. The rich black lines, textures and tactile responses of the printmaking process had an immediate impact on my creative thinking and way of working. |
| I found that I could experiment, playing with the materials and challenging myself in ways that other art mediums did not offer me.
My work is greatly influenced by my instinctual responses to my art materials and chosen printmaking process. The resulting imagery is created through the development of many layers in an additive and subtractive way. I love the often-unexpected outcomes in printmaking
and working them into the final image.
I am inspired by nature – its organic lines, shapes, forms, and movements. Atmospheric changes in color and light and the resulting patterns and shadows they create are a rich source of subject matter for me. Most recently my work has become figurative based on drawings and photos of family.

Hiroko Shikashio
A fascination with color has always been the main focus in my watercolor work.
If sun rays capture our hearts like a rainbow, I am driven to express that vitality of the spectrum. Also, echoes of rhythm in my work become necessary to finish off the beat as in music.
When I work in grid format, I improvise the orchestration in the sense of each musical instrument harmonizing to unite and complete the whole musical score.

Highlights from our October 2022 exhibition at the DeBlois Gallery in Middletown RI. Our Exhibition this past fall was well received and presented a broad selection of our work exploring paper as both a substrate and as a medium.

In addition to a selection of work from our current members, the exhibition included three accordion books created as time capsules of the group. Each book, produced annually, starting in 2019, includes one original work from each member.
Collectively the books were created as portable portfolios to promote the group. The 2020 book was created with the help of the US Postal Service during the pandemic while we were limited to meeting via Zoom. The 2022 book brings this ongoing project up to date, includes work from a number of newest members providing a current snapshot of the group.

| Paul Murray joined with three contemporary New England artists in the Mattatuck Museum’s invitational exhibit, Unplugged: New England Artists Depict Trees, which encourages taking a break from technology to find refuge in meditative views of trees and forests. Open now thru February 5th, the exhibition features five of his Namibian works, shown here, with the exhibition poster. The Museum is located at 144 West Main Street in Waterbury, CT. |

A Winning Way in Mystic

|  | Fascinated by Animals…
Kendra Ferreira will be having a solo exhibit at the Providence Art Club, Dodge House Gallery March 26 to April 14, 2023. Opening Reception will be Sunday, March 26 from 2 to 4 pm.
The exhibit will focus on her recent body of colored pencil drawings and watercolors depicting a series of animals from her 2021 safari trip to the Kenya and Tanzania regions of Africa. Kendra was able to photograph animals close up and immersed in their natural habitat. Fascinated by animal life and behaviors in the Serengeti and Massai Mara, she returned home to create colored pencil portraits capturing personalities and expression. |

 | Transformative Memories...Grace Bentley-Scheck's work was included in the Society for American Graphic Artists annual juried members' show. This year, it included an auxiliary show at The Gallery at the Met Store. |

will have an article published in the IAPMA (International Association of Hand Papermakers and Paper Artists) Bulletin #62.
The Bulletins have specific articles on paper making techniques, historical essays, and contemporary artistic methods of paper making. The article is titled "The Fullest Expression" and is a brief essay on how she used onion skins from the farm harvest to make paper. |  |

 | Fostering Solidarity in Cuba
Paul Murray, along with his Australian wildlife photographer colleague, Joshua Holko, and a group of Cuban photographers from Camaguey and Santiago de Cuba participated in La Pandilla (“The Gang”), a curated exhibition bringing together a “colleague gang" with diverse works and an interest in transcending borders with their art, in month-long exhibitions in Camaguey and Santiago de Cuba. |

 | Bringing Art To Cubans In Their Schools
Utilizing network-based technology and augmented reality, Cynthia DiDonato and Paul Murray along with other artists from the United States, Australia and Cuba participated in the Council of Plastic Arts of Camaguey’s “Augmented Reality: City of Art”, an initiative to bring art to those who might not get to a gallery.
Cynthia’s Paisaje Interior (Inner Landscape), a portfolio of her digital artistry, and Paul’s Recuerdos (Memories), a collection of images from his photo treks, were on view at two Camaguey educational centers – one specializing in teacher education and another focusing on science and technology - as part of the six-exhibit initiative at various educational venues. |

| A New Signature Member at the New England Watercolor Society
Cynthia DiDonato’s watercolor painting Relic, was selected for the 2022 New England Watercolor Society’s (NEWS) North American Open Juried Exhibition as one of 85 works from 435 submissions by 202 artists. The show was on display at the Plymouth (MA) Center for the Arts in November. Cynthia’s inclusion in the exhibit earned her a Signature Membership in NEWS.

“Persistence” Debuts
in India and Beyond…
Chosen from 333 submissions, Cynthia DiDonato’s artwork Persistence, was one of 40 artist’s work juried into the international “Unconnected Yet” exhibition in Kolkata, India. Her work will be on view in person and online as well as being part of a published catalog. Presently, the hope is to have further “Unconnected Yet” exhibitions in Boston, Baltimore,
and Mexico.

 | Advancing To Copley Artist at the Copley Society of Art
Last month, the Copley Society of Art's (Co|So) Board of Governors approved Paul Murray as a Copley Artist (CA) after joining in mid-2020. Only about 30 percent of the over 300 artist members advance to the CA level.
Dating back to 1879, Co|So is the nation's oldest non-profit arts association and hosts many exhibits and events every year in their galleries at 158 Newbury Street in Boston's Back Bay. |

Against All Odds… an International win against nearly 14,000 entries |
| Competing against nearly 14,000 entries from over 120 countries in the 2022 International Photography Awards competition, Paul Murray’s Namibian image, Enormity, won a Second Place in the Professional Division's Nature category, and was distinguished as a Jury Top 5 selection, a distinction given to only 173 works garnered from about 90 jurors’ opinions. |

 | Cuban Boxing Youth Garner Second Place in Plymouth
Paul’s Cuban image, Training for Life, was awarded Second Place in Color Photography in the Plymouth Center for the Arts’ 55th Annual Juried Art last October. The 199-piece exhibit was drawn from about 700 entries covering many mediums. |

Additionally, all our group activities complement and enhance the exhibiting, publishing, licensing and selling activities that we do as individual artists.
Are you interested in joining 19 on Paper?
Based on the group’s size and composition, we invite artists to be members. After an informal discussion about interests and expectations, those invited are asked to share a representative set of their paper-based work, a resume highlighting their artistic experience, and any other material that could assist with the group’s membership decision. Since we value exchange, collaboration, and continuity, consistent participation in our monthly meetings and group activities is an important membership commitment.
